Obituary

William Rudolph Corbus, age 91, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025 in Chipley, Florida.  He was born on March 29, 1933 in Vallejo, California to the late Rear Admiral (Ret.) John and Alice Kirkland Corbus.  The son of a career naval officer, he lived in various locations, including twice in Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone, during his childhood.  He graduated in 1951 from Robert E. Fitch High School, Groton, Connecticut, where he took part in shot put on the Track and Field team, and began college at the University of Hawaii, where his father was stationed.  After two years, he transferred to Brown University, graduating with an A.B. degree in American Civilization in 1955.  He earned a B.C.S. degree in Accountancy and Business Administration from Benjamin Franklin University, Washington, DC, in 1962.  William served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1951 to 1963, including two years active duty in the Mediterranean and at NAS Key West.

He met his wife, Jean Lucas, in 1959 through the SPEBSQA (barbershop harmony) and Sweet Adelines, of which they were both members, respectively.  After marrying on June 24, 1961, they settled in Arlington, Virginia.  He was employed by a Certified Public Accounting firm in Arlington and later by the General Accounting Office.  In 1973, the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where they became owners and managers of the Panasea Motel, Treasure Island.  After the sale of the Panasea, he became a deacon and custodian at Azalea Baptist Church, St. Petersburg.  William and Jean retired to McIntosh, Florida in 1999, where they enjoyed fishing and were active members of Orange Lake Baptist Church.  They relocated to Chipley, Florida in 2010.

William was an active member of First Baptist Church, Chipley, and loved his church work.  He also was an avid reader and history trivia buff.  William was very patient, kind, helpful, and dependable.  He enjoyed football and game shows, with Jeopardy! And Wheel of Fortune his favorites.

William was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Olive Corbus Abel, and brother-in-law, Reed Abel.  He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean Lucas Corbus; two daughters, Judy Corbus of Chipley, Florida, and Lorie Corbus Geller and husband Greg, and one granddaughter, Marigold Geller of Santa Fe, New Mexico.  He also is survived by one niece, Barbara Abel Burkland; two nephews, Owen Abel and Douglas Abel; two great-nephews, Nicholas Burkland and John Burkland; and several cousins.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, 11:00 A.M. CST, at First Baptist Church, Chipley; visitation will be one hour prior, with Brown Funeral Home directing.  Interment was at Garden Sanctuary, Seminole, Florida.  In honor of his life and memory, in lieu of flowers, donations to First Baptist Church Chipley Building Fund or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
