Virginia Carol Owens Barber, 92, slipped away Sunday morning, June 21st, into the presence of her Saviour. She was born to Thomas Elrie and Gladys Pippin Owens April 9, 1934 in Washington County, Florida.
The oldest of three girls, she became the farm help and tomboy who squirrel-hunted with her daddy and helped in the wartime garden to feed extended family. She told her school friend Becky Yates a few years ago that she often sang that old choral arrangement of The Lord’s Prayer as she went to sleep.
Carol married neighboring farm boy Raymond Dwight Barber in 1951 beginning twenty years of Air Force adventure through many states and even to the Philippine Islands. Along the way they cultivated many friendships and church families that enriched their lives as their family grew. Carol’s life after settling in Chipley in 1970 included returning to farm life and working in food services at both Kate M. Smith and Chipley High School. She enjoyed teaching nursery and preteen Sunday school as well as entertaining the parade of grandsons that arrived.Carol enjoyed ten years of volunteer work at Northwest Florida Community Hospital. She ministered with bereavement food here at New Life for many years.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of nearly 50 years, Raymond Dwight Barber. She is survived by her sisters, Sarah Owens Rudd and Angie Hughes (Bill).
