Verdell Johns Carter, age 94, passed from this life Saturday, March 23, 2024 at her home. She was born March 4, 1930 to the late Tom and Mary (Walters) Johns in Wausau, Florida. Ms. Verdell was a lifelong resident of Chipley and a member of the First Baptist Church of Chipley.
Ms. Verdell retired from the Northwest Florida Hospital after 30 years, she was the supervisor of Medical Records. After retirement she loved working in her yard raising 100's of lilies and amaryllis; fishing with her son, Ira; and going to gospel sings on Tuesday Night. She enjoyed growing and picking blueberries, peas, butter beans, collards, lemons, grapefruit, and satsumas. She was an avid square dancer and she spent many vacations in Europe. She was active in the Triple L in her church and went on all the trips they planned. She enjoyed camping with Ira and Beth, fishing on the lakes, creeks and river they went to and loved her art work.
She loved the Lord with all her heart and was faithful to attend church, prayer, reading her Bible. Ms. Verdell was devoted to her Sunday School and spent many days providing food to activities at the church. She loved her family and every holiday found her celebrating it with them.
Ms. Verdell is preceded by her parents, her husband; Junior Estee Carter, her son; Dennis Carter, her grandson; Jason L. Carter, her brother; Theo Johns, and her sisters; Alice Crutchfield, Elena Dunn, and Helen Clavier.
She is survived by her son; Ira Carter and wife Beth of Chipley, Florida, her daughter; Ann Gilbert and companion Danny Chunning of Foley, Alabama, her 3 granddaughters; Tori White and husband Andy of Chipley, FL, Jessica Walker and husband Jamie of Gulf Breeze, FL, and Michele Lee and Husband Nick of St. Augustine, FL, her grandson; Eric Gilbert and wife Jennifer of Marianna, FL, and 8 great grandchildren; Mia, Cole, Haiden, Marissa, Katelynn, Logan, Will, Sophie, Zoey and Ryan.
Her funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at First Baptist Church in Chipley, Florida with the Rev. Mike Orr officiating. Interment will follow in the Blue Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
