Shafter L. Johnson Jr., age 79 of Chipley, passed away Monday, December 5, 2011 at his home. Mr. Johnson was born May 20, 1932 in Thomas County, Georgia to the late Shafter L. Sr. and Lucile (Hurst) Johnson. He was very proud of his five and a half year service in the U.S. Navy as a boilerman. Mr. Johnson had been a resident here since 1959, coming from Jacksonville, Florida He was a retired Southern Bell employee, working in Central Office Maintenance, and former self-employed electrician at Johnson Electric. He was a 25 year member of the American Legion and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chipley. Survivors include; his wife of 59 years, Jean Johnson of Chipley; three sons, Shafter L. Johnson III of Chipley, Dennis Odell Johnson and wife Kathy of Graceville, Calvin Rex Johnson and wife Michelle of Enterprise, Ala; two brothers, L.D. Johnson of Ochlocknee, Georgia and Jesse Johnson and wife Sandy of Cleveland, Tenn.; two sisters, Rebecca Carlton of Soddy Daisy, Tenn. and Esper Yauch and husband Frank of Thomasville, Georgia; seven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 8, 2011 at 10 A.M. in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry May officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the Church. Graveside services will follow at 3 P.M. Eastern time at the Ochlocknee Cemetery in Ochlocknee, Georgia with military honors observed at graveside. Brown Funeral Home of Chipley is in charge of the arrangements.
