The fifth child of seven born to Mary and Michael Darany, who had migrated from Cornwall Ontario Canada to become American Citizens a few years before.
Sam's Father, (Aziz) Michael, was a reasonably educated man who could do anything with his hands passing that on to his children. He was a Sheep Rancher with a working small farm and boarding house that he raised his children along with the help of Sam's mother Mary George Darany.
At one point Sam's Dad did take a job at the Alcoa Aluminum Plant there in Massina, that actually is how the family finally became American Citizens as he was offered the job of running the big steel smeltering buckets a job no one wanted so they could pour the aluminum into the molds that became the products to build with. The project they were working on was the Empire State building that is how the family became Americans.
Sam's later would relate the stories to his own children how the life of the sheep ranch was and how he would tend to the sheep in the fields all day with his dogs.
His father still had a horse and buggy and would use it to go into the town to shop and take him along. However, they also had a big Dodge Touring Car that the entire family would go on road trips together in.
Dad would talk about how tuff the winter's there where and how they would have to jump out of the second story windows of the house to climb down the snow drifts from the night before and remove it so that family could function. Mornings started very early he recalled to his son's Michael and Sammy Jr many years later.
At some point in time Sam's Father and Mother heard the call from Henry Ford for all who were interested to come to Detroit Michigan and work in the factory making the Ford and was paying a wage that was not ever experienced at the time. People flocked from all the way South America; Mexico to Canada to Europe, and Asia. Truly the American Melting Pot of all of the ready willing and able peoples of globe were coming together there and becoming Americans.
That eventually when Sam was about in 5th grade is where he spent his youth owned his first motor cycle; went to the famous Cass Technical School to perfect his skills in everything from tool and die work to building a home to repairing an automobile, he could do anything.
Along the way one day he was asked by his cousin to help her move into her new apartment that weekend which he cheerfully agreed to. That would be the moment and time when he first laid his eyes on the special lady that he could not thinking about to this day my mother Brigida (Betty; the "Babe") Cassisi. One knockout of a lady that left him speechless. He said to her where you have been all my life and she replied waiting for you Sammy.
Well that was that and after a few years of going together, World War II came along and took Sam away to fight the war in the Pacific Theater as they say, finding himself in some of the biggest sea battles in history and three invasions before he came home. A true hero.
He never talks about those times in war, as it made a deep impact on him and all the men and woman of the time.
Thank you Dad.
So, when he got home him and the "Babe", got started making a family. The Babe had some problems with having children and miscarriage the first time a baby girl which she really never got over. The second time was Michael in 1946 and Sammy Jr came along five years later.
The Babe and Sam Lived in their first home two blocks from Packard's factory for a number of years with their cousins living upstairs and the Darany's living downstairs.
There was an attic and a basement as well the front and the back of the big old houses had porches that were the place to hang out. In those days late forties and early 50's America was still listening to the radio for the most part and people would gather around the old box and listen and talk about everything.
Sam however got a little extra money together and one day he had delivered to the house the first Television in the naborhood. It was an Emerson with a big tall wooden cabinet that held all of the big vacuum tubes that made the magic happened of pictures with words it was truly magical to all. In fact Sam had the entire naborhood on that big front porch we talked about earlier, looking through the windows like it was a drive in or something it was a sight to see. He was very proud that he was able to accomplish that for my Mom the Babe.
Other things he was accomplishing at the time is like the home they lived in Sam was acquiring possession of abandoned factory homes from the banks to make the viable with going in and fixing them up and then renting them to the factory families for something they could afford putting a roof over many unfortunate family's heads. He was a special guy. Ultimately, that would become a money maker for Sam and it would assist the family with its future growth.
One of the things that was a serious problem is that when the Babe was young she had contracted Polio in her right leg and further along with polio it seems comes other complications that led finally serious issues with rumitoid arthritis which would leave her crippled in bed when the weather would turn cold.
After many years went by and a couple of family moves from the Factory home to a farm to back to the suburbs of Detroit, Sam's Mother Mary George Darany decided she was going to move to Miami Florida of all places and be leaving shortly with his youngest sister Joanie. This was now the Mid 50's. This was an opportunity as the doctors had been telling Sam and Babe to move to a warmer climate for Mom's health. As the winter begin to set in Dad decided that's it as my Mom begin to cripple up we are going to Miami Florida. We got in the car packed with everything you could imagine and went on a cross country drive to Miami for our first look at where we would eventually move to a year later. As my Dad got closer to Florida my Mom Blossom like a rose as the weather changed and got warmer. By the time we hit Florida she was feeling better than ever. Sam never looked back and never regretted it.
It was 1956 Sam was 33 years old the town had a population less the 200,000 at the time and was like a paradise.
As the years went by Sam and the Babe kept the family healthy and headed in the right directions. Eventually Michael the oldest join the Navy as Sam had done and went to Viet Nam for 3 and half tours of duty.
He eventually got married and had one daughter Danielle Cherie Darany. She is now married with two Sons, Sebastian and Dominic, with one son on the way in June who I am told will be named Christian.
Sam and the Babe had a long life together in Florida and moved around a bit but never left the state. Eventually in June of 2003 The Babe passed away in Sam's arms on the way to the Hospital in Chipley Florida. Sam's has not quit been the same sense. He kept company for a few years with a widowed lady from the Rosary Society at the church who knew my Mom and Dad. Her husband had died a few years before my Mom. So, after a couple years my Dad took up with her until she passed on. He took it very hard. Losing two lady's he loved and cared for was too much. He became withdrawn after a time and that is when his memory really begins to fade.
Eventually he was taken to California where he lived with his Son Michael and his wife Deborah until it got to the point where he needed special help of the angels that make assisted living work. In his last days, Sam resides at, Pacifica Newport Mesa Costa Mesa California a Memory Assisted Living facility. The care was beyond words. Thank you for that.
He was as happy as one can be when he arrived at age 92 soon to be 93, surrounded by folks of similar age with lots to talk about when they get around to it.
Let's face it we all are going to get old one day and we need to be in a place we can feel safe and cared for. It may not be like your original home but it is your new home a safe place where in the last years of his life, Sam Darany and his friends can grow older together safe and sound.
Sam was known for his Singing and Dancing and to this day, all of his friend talk about and his new friends are discovering and enjoying. He kept it up, until about the last couple months of his life. Now in passing I am sure he is going to keep it up for my Mom, Family and Friends in Heaven. Keep it Up Dad, you are the greatest. A Special Man A Special Father. Thanks for being our Dad.
