Obituary

Roger L. Laney Jr was born on June 16, 1931, in Chipley, Florida to Roger L. Laney Sr. and Addie Mae Laney Caldwell.  He died peacefully at his residence in Chipley on August 3, 2024.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bettie Harrell Laney, and one brother, Wallace Laney. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Karen Clayton Laney, her family-daughter Tabatha Desrosiers (husband Scott), son John Gwyn (wife Heather) and their families, one son (Roger L Laney III and wife Margie), one daughter (Sheila Laney Kirkland and husband Brad), 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

He was a lifelong resident of Chipley, where he was very active in the community, serving as Chair/Board member of the Chipley Main Street Program, the Chipley Landmark Commission, The Chipley Redevelopment Agency, the Florida First Bank and the Chipola Junior College Board of Trustees.

He graduated from Chipley High School, married his high school sweetheart, Bettie Jean Harrell, and attended Florida State University on a math scholarship and was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity, thus developing his lifelong love and passion for his beloved Florida State Seminoles. Upon graduating from FSU, he worked as a math teacher at Vernon High School, but soon realized teaching was not his passion.  He found his calling in construction, where he co-founded Evergreen Construction Company with his father-in -law, Eli J Harrell. After many years in the construction business, he went to work at the Florida Department of Transportation as Financial Services Manager in the District 3 offices in Chipley, until his retirement in 2004.

Funeral services will be held at Chipley First Baptist Church on Wednesday, August 7th.  Visitation will be at 10:00 am, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am.  After the service, there will be a private burial with his immediate family at Glenwood Cemetery.  Brown's Funeral Home will be directing these services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kappa Alpha Football Scholarship at Florida State University: https://boosters.fsu.edu/leadership-giving/or to Chipley First Baptist Church.
