Dr. Ralph Daniel (Danny) Howell, 73, passed away on October 21, at Capital Regional Hospital in Tallahassee. He graduated from Holmes County High School in Bonifay and then received his BA from Mississippi College in Clinton, Ms., and his PhD from Florida State University. While in graduate school, he taught freshman English at FSU. Following graduate school, he taught English at Mississippi College until his retirement in 1994. While at Mississippi College, he was elected to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and was selected for inclusion in the 1974 edition of Personalities of the South. Upon retirement Danny returned to his hometown of Bonifay where he lived until 2010 when his health required his admission to Centrepoint Health and Rehab Center in Tallahassee. During Danny's active years, he was a member of numerous professional and nonprofessional organizations. He had taken an interest in writing, both scholarly and creatively and had many articles published in various magazines. He was a gifted storyteller and loved to entertain family and friends with stories of his teaching days. His friendly nature and unique sense of humor will be sorely missed. Danny's passion was his church and his music. He was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Chipley, where he often played the organ
Danny is predeceased by his parents, Houston and Mae Howell, and his brother, Houston Howell, Jr.
He is survived by his sisters, Evelyn Overman of Panama City and Mildred Johnson of Jacksonville; two nieces; four nephews; several great nieces and nephews; special friend, James Cates, and numerous cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 3, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthews Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ward Clarke officiating. Memorialization will be by cremation. The family request that in lieu of flowers that donations be sent to St. Matthews Episcopal Church, West Highway 90, Chipley, Fl. 32428, or to a charity of their choice. The family would also like to extent appreciation to Dr. Wallenberg and staff at Centrepoint Health and Rehab Center in Tallahassee.
