Naomi Annette Peel, age 77 of Prattville, Alabama, passed away Saturday, October 5, 2013 in Prattville. Naomi was born August 10, 1936 in Chipley, Florida to the late Charley Edward "Boss" and Mary Jane (Swindell) Peel. She was a graduate of Chipley High School and a proud graduate and fan of Florida State University. After serving her dietician internship at Iowa State University, she worked in the Lake City V.A. Hospital as a dietician before moving to Syracuse, New York as a dietician at the V.A. Hospital and to work on her master's degree. She found her home in in Ypsilanti, Michigan for 40 years where she was a professor at Eastern Michigan University, teaching nutrition where she later retired. Naomi believed in Education and loved her work and students. She continued taking different courses after retirement to enrich her life. She was active in Elderwise (a growth through lifetime learning organization for older adults in S.E. Michigan). Elderwise offer members classes, tours, events, speakers and small groups, including; the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Tigers players, detectives on safety, travel adventures and World War II experiences. She was on the Elderwise board and many committees. She took many classes (writing and poetry) and formed great friendships. Naomi was a member and involved with the Michigan and National Dietetic Association. She was involved with the Lunch Bunch- a retired group from Eastern Michigan University, but most of all she was active in her home church, Forest Baptist Church and very strong in her faith. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by a brother, Charles Edward Peel. Survivors include; her sister, Jonell Greer; a niece, Mary Jane Chesnut; nephews, Fred L. Chesnut (Lawanna), Scott Lyons, John Greer (Dede); great nephews and nieces; Patrick Chesnut, Mitch Greer, Rhyan Greer, Rhylee Greer and Cade Adkins. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Chipley with the Rev. Tim Owen officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Interment will follow in Piney Grove Cemetery.
