Obituary

Jack Alan Johnson, age 81 of Chipley, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011 in the Jackson Hospital in Marianna.
Jack was born in Fort Benning, Ga. to Decatur and Mae Parker Johnson. He moved to Chipley while his father served in the Pacific Rim, WW 2. He graduated from Chipley High School in 1946. After time at FSU, he entered the US Army as a 2nd Lt. He served proudly and with dignity for 22 years returning to Chipley in 1970, where he was honorably discharged from Ft Rucker, AL. He retired with the rank of Lt. Col.
He started his military career in the artillery. He was a Korean War Veteran. He spent many of his working years with the Nike Zeus Missile Project. He was stationed all over the United States but loved his repeat assignments in Alaska the most. Of his many military awards and decorations, his highest honor was as a recipient of the Legion of Merit. The Legion of Merit is sixth in the order of precedence of U.S. military decorations.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Bettye Armstrong Johnson, his parents and his brother Robert Johnson, all of Chipley.
Survivors include sons Michael and Eric and their wives Sharon and Terri; daughters Stephanie Herring and Leigh Brewer. He is also survived by his niece Jennifer and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Brown Funeral Home, Main Street Chapel. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Chipley with full military honors.
