Obituary

Iris Hudson Moore passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, of natural causes at the age of 83. Born and raised in Washington County, Florida, she resided in Atlanta and Athens from 1959 to 2008 before moving to Saint Johns, FL to be closer to family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 39 years, Alfred William Moore, Sr., who passed away in 2003.

Mrs. Moore graduated from Vernon High School, where she sang in the Polka Dot Quartet with her closest friends, played the snare drum in the marching band, and was on the homecoming court. After graduation, she moved to Atlanta to help her beloved brother and sister-in-law in their home and his dental practice.  During her early years in Atlanta, she also worked at Trust Company of Georgia and lived downtown with three girls who became her very best friends – Oh the stories they have told! She was a dedicated member of Virginia Avenue Baptist Church in Atlanta, where she served as church secretary and met her husband. In Athens, the Moores were active members of Beech Haven Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and managed the church kitchen.

In the Athens community, Mrs. Moore was known as the founder and owner of Mama Moore's Cookie Company, Bakery, and Tea Room. Many UGA college students worked for Mama Moore, who became a mother figure to them during their time away from home. She loved teaching and mentoring her students, as well as her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, forming lifelong friendships throughout her journey.

A deeply committed family member and friend, Mrs. Moore cherished gatherings for celebrations and special occasions. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, decorating her home for holidays, and tending to her flower gardens. She was incredibly smart, elegant and opinionated.

Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Edward and Annie Ethyl Hudson; her sisters, Margie Hudson Boyette and Mary Hudson Hodges; and her brothers, Robert Edward Hudson, Jr., Dr. Henry Jack Hudson, and Rev. Billy Eugene "Gene" Hudson. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Ulmer and husband Wayne; son, William Moore and wife Heather; and grandchildren: Ryan Ulmer (Emily), Erin Ulmer, Madelyn Moore, and Eva Moore. She is also survived by her brother, Franklin Hudson, and sister, Audrey Sexton.

The family will receive friends from 10 AM to 11 AM CT on Monday, October 28, at Brown Funeral Home in Chipley, FL. Graveside burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery in New Hope, Florida.
