Hazel Marie Wood entered into eternal life on Tuesday, June 28th in Tallahassee, FL.
Hazel was born to Richard Alma Dukes and Lois Lucille Dukes on October 1, 1928 in Toxey, AL in a log cabin built by her grandfather. She graduated from Butler High School (Butler, AL) and worked as a switchboard operator for the City of Butler until she was swept off her feet by Montgomery P. "Mont" Wood. In 1950, just 6 weeks after they met, Hazel and Mont were married in Whynot, MS (because when he asked if she would marry him, she replied, "Why not!").
As Mont was a right of way purchaser for the natural gas pipeline, Hazel and Mont moved frequently, and they lived in 28 states and 3 Canadian Provinces in their first seven years of marriage. In 1959, they settled in Chipley, FL and established it as home for their family of four, complete with two daughters, Martha Lois Wood and Dixey Mayo (Wood) Teel.
Hazel loved Gospel music and her church family from First United Methodist Church of Chipley, telling stories, laughing with family and friends and good, Southern home cooking.
She lived her final three years in Tallahassee, FL as a resident of Allegro and Tallahassee Memory Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alma & Lucille Dukes, her husband, Mont Wood, and her daughter, Martha Wood. She is survived by her daughter, Dixey Teel (Bob), and Dixey's children, Denise Harle (Jason) and Clinton Mayo (Ashley). She also is survived by Martha's daughter, Nicole Weiland (Adam) and children, Dominic and Astrid. Also surviving family include her sister, Annie Ruth Couch and her close relatives, Melvin & Linda Couch, Lisa, Tim, Reed & Quinn Yandell, Rick Couch, Carolyn & John Payne Thomas & Joe, Carrie & Jacob Payne.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 2 at 2:30 PM at Brown Funeral Home in Chipley, FL. The family will receive friends during visitation an hour before the service.
