George Douglas "Dick" Sowell passed away Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Bay Medical Center, Panama City, Fl. Mr. Sowell was born December 16, 1937, the third child of five children, to the late Charley & Ruby Sowell of Chipley, Fl. After High School and Jr. College, where he played football, Mr. Sowell served in the U.S. Navy. He lived and worked in Port St. Joe, Fl., until he was injured in an industrial accident in the late 1970's, which caused him to need & receive a kidney transplant in 1982. He was always so grateful & thankful for this new lease on life, and was trying to confirm that he was the longest living recipient of transplanted kidney with over 28 years of living after kidney transplant surgery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie, step son: Randy Hall, Brother; Charles W. Sowell, and sister-in-law; Martha Sowell. Survivors include two sons; Doug (Candace) and George Sowell of Port St. Joe, Ex-wife; Ava, mother of his two sons, Two stepsons; Tony Hall of Chipley and Danny Ray Hall of LA., numerous step-grandchildren & great-grandchildren, sister; Doris Strickland (Daryal) of Port St. Joe, and two brothers; James R. Sowell (Louise)of Panama City & Aubrey Sowell (Alexa) of Marianna. He also had numerous nieces and nephews and a special friend; Ada Mills of New Marshfield, Ohio. He was known by all as "Dick", a loving father, brother, uncle, and an avid Gator fan. He will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. at Brown Funeral Home, Main Street Chapel with the Rev. Jason Sowell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Interment will follow in Oakie Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
