Carl Young of Chipley died July 17, 2015 at his home following a brief illness. He was born November 6, 1922 in Groveland, FL, the second of four children of Carl Lester and Lela (Vaughn) Young. After graduating from Bradford High School in 1940, he went to work with the State Road Department in Jacksonville, FL as a project engineer involved in survey work. He later left the State Road Department to work with the U.S. Engineers. In May of 1943, Carl enlisted in the Army and after spending Basic Training at Camp Blanding, FL. he later volunteered for overseas duty. He was a part of the 15th Engineer Battalion, 9th Infantry Division, 39th Regiment and saw combat in France, Belgium and Germany. He was involved in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France and later fought on the Siegfried Line Where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. After several months recovering in England, he was sent back to the front lines and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Upon returning to the states in 1945, he found employments with the A&P store in Marianna, FL and after three months he was asked to go to Chipley as manager of its A&P. On April 22, 1947 Carl married the former Corinne Carlisle of Vernon, FL. In September of 1953, Carl and Corinne opened the local Piggly Wiggly Supermarket, the first self-service food store in Washington County. For the next 44 years, the Youngs worked together building and operating their business. Eventually, both their children, Lyle and Wava, as well as several of their grandchildren became involved in the business which grew from five employees to at times 55 employees. Mrs. Young passed away in November of 1997 but the store continued to operate under the direction of Carl and his son Lyle and is now in its 62nd year of operation. Survivors include, Wava Prescott and husband Edward, Lyle Young and wife Julie, five grandchildren, Zachary Prescott and wife Julia, McCall Schales and husband Rob, Allen Corbin and wife Mallory, Julianne Beasley and husband Todd, Hannah Young and eight great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 20, 2015 at the New Hope Methodist Cemetery in New Hope, FL with Reverend Johnny Shepard and Reverend Cloys Joiner officiating.
